This August 2nd and 3rd, the 11th Ubud Village Jazz Festival (UVJF) will unfold at the picturesque STHALA Ubud Portfolio Hotel, marking a new chapter in its history. As the new title sponsor, STHALA’s partnership brings an elevated grandeur to the event, now officially known as the STHALA Ubud Village Jazz Festival.
The UVJF’s journey is one of passion and vision. It all began with modest jazz concerts and jam sessions, a collaboration between Yuri Mahatma and Anom Darsana. What started as intimate gatherings has grown into a bucket list item for jazz fans worldwide. Since its inception in 2013, UVJF has faced challenges, including a hiatus in 2020 due to the global pandemic, yet it has remained resilient, evolving into an internationally acclaimed festival powered by Bali’s local talents. The festival aims to provide educational, inspirational, and appreciation-enhancing experiences for all who attend.
"Our Festival is far beyond business-as-usual. For us, commitment in terms of quality always comes first," says Anom Darsana, highlighting the festival’s ethos.
Yuri Mahatma, a jazz musician and co-founder, adds, "UVJF is a platform to express our strong commitments of ideas and concepts. That’s what makes us very unique."
UVJF stands out as Indonesia’s only festival dedicated solely to jazz, showcasing a genre that requires a refined appreciation. "We need to always educate people and reintroduce jazz. It’s a form of music that takes a certain level of appreciation from the audience to enjoy," says Mahatma. He emphasizes jazz’s essence—freedom through improvisation, a reflection of life’s complexities and sophistications.
The artist lineup for UVJF 2024 is a testament to its international and domestic appeal, featuring talents such as Adien Fazmail Quinteto (Indonesia), Benny Irawan Trio (Indonesia), Claude Diallo with Indra Gupta and Gustu Brahmanta (Switzerland-Indonesia), and many more. This eclectic mix promises to deliver unforgettable performances, each bringing their unique flair to the stage.
Beyond the music, UVJF offers a holistic experience. The festival’s architectural design, crafted by Klick Swantara Putra and Diana Surya of Archimetriz, enhances the ambiance, promising to leave attendees in awe. Attendees can enjoy local cuisine and beverages from participating vendors, adding to the sensory experience.
For those looking to immerse themselves in this unparalleled jazz experience, tickets are available on the official UVJF website or at the event venue. Whether you’re a jazz aficionado or a curious newcomer, UVJF 2024 promises an unforgettable celebration of music and culture in the heart of Ubud!
